  • Tailgate Band

In 2010, Six String Club owner Dan Rolph held auditions for a new house band, trying to draw out some of the most talented local musicians for a collaboration that would ensure that Six Strings Club remains the place to go to hear live music in Bloomington. Talent from all over the Twin Cities and the surrounding area flocked in to try their luck and talents for a spot in this band which was clearly destined for success.

The obvious choice in drummers was Tim Kramp, whose talents and musical success are well known. Among other projects, Tim is a founding member of Backyard Tire Fire, a local band that enjoys national success and has released multiple albums of original music to positive public and critical reception. Few bands are fortunate enough to have at their core a percussionist of Tim’s talent and dedication.

The bassist that stood out at the auditions was Joe Kennedy. Joe is a 20 year music veteran who describes himself as “aging gracefully.” A member of multiple bands throughout the years, Joe’s trademark style is as entertaining as it is renowned.

From the Keg Band, the group added keyboardist, guitarist, mandolin player, backup vocalist and all around musical utility player Greg Lutz. Greg’s ability to sing and play almost any instrument allows Tailgate to play a wide variety of songs and genres, and creates a fuller and more entertaining live show.

Lead guitarist Matt Huett was selected for the position despite the fact that he missed his audition. A local musical prodigy, Matt has been playing music his entire life, has toured nationally and has developed a reputation for musical ability that is well known in Central Illinois and elsewhere. For the last two years, Matt’s efforts have been focused on Belclare Road, a local band who has gained widespread popularity in a very short period of time. Matt’s captivating guitar is a crucial piece of the sound that Tailgate prides itself on, and his backing vocals mix perfectly with the vaulted Tailgate sound.

Jill Jordine was selected as the female lead vocalist. Her soaring vocals are well known throughout Bloomington-Normal. A veteran of the popular band JJ & Company, Jill spent 2 years entertaining local crowds until she left for personal reasons. When provided with the opportunity to perform again in front of a band of this caliber, Jill jumped at the chance to get back in the limelight. Jill’s stunning voice and range allows Tailgate to play fan favorite songs few other bands can pull off.

The male lead vocalist spot eventually went to Luke Dennis, the front man for Belclare Road. Luke initially agreed to join the band to fill in until a permanent member could be found, but after a single practice was so excited by the band’s potential that he joined as a permanent member. Luke’s stage presence, abilities on the harmonica, wide vocal range and ability to span genres is a critical addition to Tailgate’s sound.

This all-star lineup has since worked tirelessly to put together a set list of country and rock favorites, both new and classic, that are guaranteed to please. Developing an immediate and devoted following, the band plays to sold out crowd of fans whenever they step on stage. If you haven’t yet partied with Tailgate, you are missing out.
